Blue Iris (Iris spuria, in English also known as Blue Flag).
Blue and purple also seem to be a dominant colours in the public flower beds that have just been "updated" in the cemetery:
Not sure what this flower is, and neither is Google Image search. (They just threw all kinds of very different blue flowers at me when I uploaded this photo!)
Today, I noticed that a strange wooden "cross" structure had been added. Not sure what to make of it... I suppose time will tell if some plant is supposed to climb up on it!Yesterday was rainy, and as it was also laundry day for me, I stayed in. Today a mix of clouds with the sun breaking through, but still rather chilly winds. The forecast is that we'll probably see a bit more summery weather over the weekend, but the higher temperatures won't be lasting long, and we'll be back below 20'C again next week.
They are really stunning set against the green background. The Iris looks a bit like Japanese Iris.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be lots of different kinds of Irises, Ginny.
DeleteThat wooden cross structure is intriguing. Hopefully it turns out to be something useful or decorative! And fingers crossed the weekend does bring a bit of warmth, even if it’s just a short-lived taste of summer
ReplyDeleteThanks Ro. We had a lovely sunny and summery day today, actually - neither too hot nor too cold.
DeleteThe blue flower has a poppy-ish look about it. In any case, it is beautiful, no matter what.
ReplyDeleteWe're in for a hot couple of days, with temperatures up to 35C. Then it'll go back to low 20s from Monday onwards.
Meike, I've never heard of blue poppies, but now I look it up I think you may be right!
DeleteIt's lovely to see so many blues - they're refreshing after all the brighter colours and give perspective.
ReplyDeleteJanice, yes, there is something quite calming about them, isn't there!
Deletethe first photo is awesome, the flower is beautiful and the church in the background makes the photos special. can't wait to find out what the cross is for.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra. I walk past that flower bed often, so I'll be keeping an eye on it!
DeleteIt's interesting to see the formal planting with different shades of blue. I've just been looking at another blog where the photos are of formal flower beds all in red!
ReplyDeleteThis formality isn't something they seem to do here. Big flowerbeds with a single colour don't seem to be in favour - it's mostly fairly large plants which need constant maintenance and then get forgotten and left to run riot. Sadly, if the land area is big enough they just build on it instead - why waste the space on flowers!
Carol, this flowerbed is in the cemetery, so at least they're not likely to build on it!
DeleteThe blue flower looks like a delphinium, a typical English cottage garden plant.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about that, but thanks for the suggestion.
DeleteBlue and purple are lovely Summer colours, maybe they will plant sweet pea up the wood.
ReplyDeleteThe X looks like a trelice to me, if I spelled that correctly. Maybe a vine will grow on it.
ReplyDeleteAmy & Sandi - Time will tell, I suppose! :)
